Choosing a prom dress is one of the biggest decisions you have to make your junior and senior year (apart from college, of course). Finding the right dress for yourself should include a couple of factors.
First, do some research and see what is out there. See something in a magazine you like? Cut it out and take it to the dress shop with you. When choosing a color, keep in mind colors that compliment your hair color and skin tone.
Accentuate what you like about your body. If you have great shoulders, show them off. Like your hips? Maybe a more form fitting dress would be best for you.

If you take a camera with you they can take a pictures of the good options for you to see. Sometimes things look different when you get a different perspective. But don't forget the 3 way mirrors, you need to see what it looks like from all angles.
Don't be afraid to use the sales associate. Show them a picture of what you think you want and she can bring similar styles.
Ultimately go with the one you HAVE to have. Don't get pushed into a choice.
